A 44-year-old man is in a critical condition after a violent assault by two other men on a suburban footpath in Melbourne's outer south-east just after noon today.
Police believe a vehicle carrying two men and a woman pulled up on the corner of Westminster Drive and Liberty Avenue in Rowville, where an argument arose between the two men and another man walking along the footpath.
"An altercation ensued at about 12pm between the two males in the vehicle and a 44-year-old male on the footpath, who has sustained serious head injuries," Victoria Police spokeswoman Anita Brens said.
She said the three men were known to each other and the vehicle's passengers were assisting police with their enquiries.
The man was taken to Dandenong hospital in a serious but stable condition with upper body and head injuries, according to Ambulance Victoria spokesman Ray Rowe.
