Rock star's wife saves man from drowning

Sat January 28, 2012 5:03pm

HER son achieved international infamy for his role in a shocking London riot - but Polly Samson, the wife of Pink Floyd star Dave Gilmour, showed a very different streak of character when she helped rescue a drowning man from the sea.

Novelist and journalist Samson first referred to this week's incident, near her Hove home on the south coast, in a

Twitter message to friends, local newspaper The Argus reported.

"I could have done with your manly chest just now as pulled drowning man from sea who didn't want to be saved," Samson tweeted to one friend.

A number of people hauled the man, who is believed to have been suicidal, out of the water.

Samson also said she was "weirdly shaken by saving someone who clearly wanted to die."

She lives in Hove with guitar legend Gilmour, who adopted her son Charlie when they married.

Cambridge University undergraduate Charlie Gilmour was jailed last year after admitting to violent disorder during student fees protests in London.

He was involved in an attack on a convoy carrying the Prince of Wales and his wife, Camilla, after the royal couple became inadvertently mixed up in the demonstration on their way to a theatre performance.

The 21-year-old, who admitted drinking and taking LSD and Valium, was earlier seen taunting police and swinging from a war memorial.

He later expressed his "deepest apologies."
