JAMES "The Missile" Magnussen had promised himself a trip to the tattoo parlour on his victorious return from the London Olympics.
He had big plans. First a gold medal, then a permanent reminder of his glorious triumph in the pool in London.
This week The Missile returned to Sydney tired and sober, his dream of Olympic gold in tatters.
Still, if the swimming hero couldn't realise his gold medal dream, he could still have the tattoo with 2012 in Roman numerals.
Silver is worth remembering, too. On Wednesday Magnussen visited Bondi tattoo parlour, Bondi Ink, and claimed his reward.
The new tatt is not his first. He also has the Olympic rings on his back and the Greek letter "alpha" on his forearm.
His tattoos, he says, remind him to toughen up.
