Tas Govt threatens to ban NZ apples
8:46 PM February 28

The Tasmanian Government has threatened a ban on imports of New Zealand apples if the Federal Government allows them into the country.

Biosecurity Australia is expected to recommend the move after the Import Risk Analysis Appeal Panel dismissed concerns about the risk of introducing exotic diseases and pests.

The Tasmanian Government is concerned about the effectiveness of chlorine treatment to reduce the risk of fire blight and the reliance on inspection regimes to keep infected fruit out of the country.

Thomas Frankcomb of Fruit Growers Tasmania says the industry believes the risk is significant.

"Down the track if outbreaks did occur and we did manage to keep Tasmania free of some of these pests and diseases then there would be significant advantages for Tasmania down the track," he said.
