A MAN died after he lost control of his vehicle, smashed through a road sign, slid down the median strip and rolled into a culvert in a horror crash.
The 57-year-old driver suffered horrific head and chest injuries. He was trapped in the upside-down wreck of the refrigerator van on the Stuart Hwy at Humpty Doo. The man was freed by NT Fire and Rescue after the single-vehicle crash shortly before 2pm. St John Ambulance rushed to the scene to find the man's heart had already stopped. Intensive care paramedics resuscitated the man on the way to Royal Darwin Hospital, but he clung to life for only a couple of hours. "We gave him the best care possible," St John Ambulance operations manger Craig Garraway said.
