HIS box-office pulling power is under scrutiny and his personal life in tatters but, in a strange twist, girlfriend Kristen Stewart's infidelity may be a blessing for Robert Pattinson's career.
The 26-year-old heart-throb has received an outpouring of support after explosive pictures, published last week, showed Stewart cheating on her Twilight co-star and boyfriend with her Snow White And The Huntsman director, Rupert Sanders.
It was another massive blow to Pattinson after his two recent films, Bel Ami and Cosmopolis (opening here on Thursday), bombed with moviegoers, earning him the nickname "RIP-Patz".
So far, Cosmopolis has grossed just $2.7 million globally since its European premiere in May, while the period drama Bel Ami has earned only $118,000 in the US in the past two months.
Stewart, on the other hand, was riding high. The 22-year-old is currently Hollywood's highest-earning star and her most recent flick, Snow White, was a blockbuster. But, in only a matter of days, she's become a "home wrecker" after her affair with Sanders, a 41-year-old married father-of-two, was revealed in US Weekly. A witness told the magazine Stewart and Sanders were "making out" like teenagers.
The pair were due to work with each other again on the Snow White sequel (Sanders' wife, Liberty Ross, played Stewart's mother in the first instalment) - a project that is now in serious jeopardy.
Stewart's Snow White co-star, Chris Hemsworth, was stunned at news of the affair, telling Insider on Thursday: "I can't comment. Look, honestly, I don't know anything."
He also revealed the sequel is yet to be given the green light.
"I've signed on to it but that doesn't mean we make it," he said. "They plan to make another one, they're pretty keen, and the first one was certainly successful enough."
