Why Adele flipped the bird on stage

Wed February 22, 2012 4:15pm

SINGING sensation Adele won two key gongs at the Brit Awards, just a week after dominating the Grammys - then ensured even more attention by flipping the bird when she was cut off during an emotional acceptance speech.

Adele, who was nominated in three Brit Awards categories, won British Female Solo Artist and Album of the Year for her sophomore release 21 - but she lost out in the best British Single section, Sky News reported.

That prize went to X Factor boyband One Direction, who earned their first Brit for their hit What Makes You Beautiful.

"Nothing makes me prouder, yeah, then coming home with six Grammys, then coming to the Brits and winning Album of the Year," Adele, whose full name is Adele Laurie Blue Adkins, said.

"I'm so, so proud to be British and to be flying our flag."

The 23-year-old raised eyebrows when she flipped her middle finger after she was cut off to make way for Outstanding Contribution winner Blur's closing performance when the show over-ran - in part due to Blur singer Damon Albarn's long acceptance speech, the Press Association reported.

But Adele later assured fans the insult was not aimed at them.

"I'm sorry if I offended anyone but it was the suits that offended me. Thank you all very much and thanks to my fans. I don't want them to think I was swearing at them," she said backstage.

"We regret this happened and we send our deepest apologies to Adele that her big moment was cut short this evening due to the live show over-running," a Brit Awards spokesperson said in a statement later, according to Reuters.

Adele's honours came just nine days after she took out six Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, including Album Of The year for 21, Record Of The Year for Rolling In The Deep and Best Song for writing Rolling In The Deep with Paul Epworth.
