Internet FAQs
What is the World Wide Web?
The World Wide Web (or WWW) is the graphic interactive part of the internet, which allows us to access different sites worldwide. It is available via internet browser software. You can find out more about the internet here.
What is a URL?
Every piece of information on the WWW has its own address or URL (Uniform Resource Locater). To go to the location you require, type the address into the address window of Internet Explorer and it will take you to the page at the address you have entered. WWW addresses look something like this: www.optuszoo.com.au.
Is a URL the same as an email address?
No. An email address will look something like: username@optusnet.com.au, while a URL usually has www. at the beginning. URLs are addresses of web sites that you visit with your browser. Email addresses are for sending messages to an email box.
How do I locate a site?
When connecting to the Internet after installing the Optus Cable Internet CD, your web browser will automatically open at the myZOO home page. This site is an excellent starting point on the Internet and contains all of your account information plus other useful tools and information.
If you know the Internet address of a site you are looking for, you can type it in the address bar near the top of your browser window. Something like www.optuszoo.com.au will work fine. Don't worry about putting the http:// in front of the address as your web browser will put it in for you. If you don't know the address of the site you are looking for, you can use a search engine to find the address for you.
How fast is the Optus Wireless Broadband service?
The Optus Wireless Broadband service delivers data speeds averaging 500kbps to 1.5Mbps with network capability of up to 3.6 Mb per second. Actual speed depends on a number of factors including the number of customers using the channel, the distance from the base station and hence the signal strength, the quality of the radio signal, the transmitted power, the antennae used, the capacity of the uplink, the frequencies used and location (e.g. outdoors or indoors).
Generally, you will experience speeds considerably faster than with a dial-up connection.
Searching the Internet
If you don't know the address of the site you are looking for, you can use a search engine to find the address for you. There are many search engines available on the Internet. We have included one in the myZOO homepage, for your convenience. You will see a white bar with a Search button located in the header, at the top of the page. Type in the topic you want to search for and press the Search button.
If you have limited success with your search you can try different words that relate to the topic you are interested in. Each search engine on the Internet has a different way to combine words to refine your search. It is recommended that you read the instruction page on any search engines' web site to achieve fast and accurate results for your search. You can use the back button in the top left hand corner of your web browser window to retreat out of sites you are not interested in to return to your search results page.
What exactly is a download?
Downloads include all material transferred to your computer from the Internet including items like web pages, text, graphics, email, software, audio and video files.
Someone told me everyone downloads when they're connected to the Internet, is that true?
Yes, every web page and every email you see on your computer is "downloaded" from the Internet. The Internet is actually a network that transfers data between computers. That data is what makes up web pages, text, email, audio and video that you receive and see on your computer. So every user of every ISP "downloads" data while they are using the Internet.
Can I fax over my Optus modem?
No, the modem is not connected to your phone line. If you still have your old fax modem, you can use it as normal to send faxes.
