Mobile Phone Setup
You can connect to the Optus Wireless Broadband Network using your Optus Mobile phone as a modem. Once you configure your phone and connection you will be able access all the internet has to offer.
The costs associated with accessing the internet vary. Please refer to your price plan for details.
A number of configuration guides can be found below to provide an example of the steps required to connect. You may need to refer to your mobile user guide or the manufacturer's website for detailed steps on configuring your mobile phone and browser.
Windows XP
Nokia 6680 GPRS Setup for Windows XP via Cable
Note: Please ensure that the drivers for the data cable have been installed, if not the drivers can be downloaded from the Nokia website. Ensure that the handset is plugged into the USB port via the data cable.
Configure the Modem
- Click on Start, then select Control Panel
- Click on Switch to Classic View, then select Phone and Modem Options
- Click on the Modems Tab and highlight Nokia 6680 USB and Select Properties
- In the Modem tab select 460800 in the Maximum Port Speed drop down list
- Select the Advanced tab, In Extra initialization Commands type in +cgdcont=1,"ip","internet"
- Click OK twice to go back to the Control Panel
Configure the Connection
Ensure the handset is still paired with the laptop,
- Select Network Connections in the Control Panel.
- Select Create a new connection, a Network Connection Wizard will load select Next
- Select Connect to the internet and click Next
- Select Setup my connection manually, and click Next
- Select Connect using a dial-up modem and click Next
- Ensure Modem - Nokia 6680 USB is the only modem checked. Click Next
- Enter Wireless Internet in the ISP Name, click Next
- Enter *99# in the Telephone Number field and uncheck Use area code and dialling rules, click Next
- Ensure the Username and password are left blank, click Next
- Check Add a short cut to this connection on my desktop and click Finish
The connection is now configured

Note: Please ensure that the drivers for Bluetooth have been installed on the Laptop, if not the drivers can be downloaded from the manufacturer website if required. You will need to pair the Laptop and the handset via the laptop's Bluetooth manager. Please refer to your IT support for assistance in pairing.
Configure the Modem
- Click on Start, then select Control Panel
- Click on Switch to Classic View, then select Phone and Modem Options
- Click on the Modems Tab and highlight Bluetooth Modem and Select Properties
- In the Modem tab select 115200 in the Maximum Port Speed drop down list
- Select the Advanced tab, In Extra initialization Commands type in +cgdcont=1,"ip","internet"
- Click OK twice to go back to the Control Panel
Configure the Connection
Ensure the handset is still paired with the laptop,
- Select Network Connections in the Control Panel.
- Select Create a new connection, a Network Connection Wizard will load select Next

Activating Infrared
- Press Menu
- Highlight Connectivity, press Select
- Highlight Infrared, press Select
- Phone will display "Infrared reception activated"
Installing the Modem
- On the PC, click on START, then Control Panel
- Open Phone and Modem Options, click on the Modems tab
- Activate the IR on the handset and align it with the IR port on the computer
- Windows will now detect and automatically install the device. Under modem tab will now show Standard Modem over IR item on virtual COM port - eg COM7
- Highlight the new modem, click on Properties
- Hghlight the Modem tab, set the Maximum Port Speed to 115200
- Highlight the Advanced tab and at Extra Initalisation Commands enter +cgdcont=1,"ip","internet" press OK twice
- Open Network Connections, select Create a new connection from panel on the left
- Click Next, select Connect to the Internet followed by Next
- Highlight Set up my connection manually, click Next
- Highlight Connect using a dial-up modem, click Next
- Ensure there is still an active IR connection to the computer, select the newly installed modem on the left and de-select any other modems (You may need to re-establish the IR connection) Click Next
- Enter a name for this connection. e.g. Optus Internet. Click Next
- For the phone number enter *99#. Click Next
- User name and Password are to be left blank. Uncheck all tick-boxes. Click Next. Click Finish
- The dial-up box will now appear. Click Properties
- Highlight the selected modem, click Configure
- Set the speed to 115200. Ensure that only Enable hardware flow control is checked. Press OK
- Highlight the Networking tab. Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click Properties
- Highlight Use the following DNS server addresses.
- For Preferred DNS server enter 202.139.124.225 and Alternate DNS server leave blank.
- Press OK and OK again to return to the dial-up screen
- Click Dial to connect
The device will now connect to the internet

Configure the Modem

Installing the Modem
- Activate the IR on the handset (from main screen scroll to Settings, Connectivity then scroll down to infrared and press select)
- Align the IR port on the handset with the IR Port on the PC
- Double click on the My Computer icon.
- Double click on the Control Panel icon
- Double click on the Phone and Modem Options icon
- Click the Modems tab
- Highlight the Standard modem over IR link and click on Properties
- Check that the Maximum speed field is set to 115200
- Click on the Advanced tab at top
- In the Extra Initialisation field, enter +cgdcont=1,"ip","internet"
- Click OK twice
Setting Up Dial Up Networking
- In the Control Panel window, double click on Network and Dial-up Connections.
- If this is the first connection made here then skip the next step
- Double click on Make New Connection
- Click Next
- Select Dial-up to the Internet and click on Next
- Select I want to set up my Internet connection manually and click on Next
- Select I connect through a phone line and a modem and click on Next
- In the Select a modem to use to connect to the Internet field, ensure that the required modem is selected
- Click Next
- In the Telephone Number field, enter *99# and untick Use area code and dialling rules
- Click Next to continue
- Under User name enter your mobile voice number
- Under Password again enter your mobile voice number
- Click Next to continue
- Type a name for your connection, e.g., Optus GPRS
- Click Next
- Select No when you are prompted to set up a mail account and Click Next
- Untick the Connect to the internet immediately check box and Click Finish
- Right click on your newly created connection icon and Click Properties
- Click the Configure button
- Set Maximum speed to 57600 and Click OK
- Again Click the OK button
- Double click on your newly created connection icon
- Click Dial
The devices will now connect to the Internet.

- Scroll up to On and press the Centre Menu button, Press Back three times.
Configure the Modem
- Align the IR port on the handset with the IR Port on the PC (Note: If windows advises to install the new modem, proceed with installation)
- Click on Start, Highlight Settings and Control Panel
- Select Phone and Modem Options, then click on the Modems Tab
- Highlight Standard modem over IR Link and Select Properties
- In the General tab select 115200 in the Maximum Port Speed drop down list
- Click on the Advanced tab at top
- In the Extra Initialisation field, enter +cgdcont=1,"ip","internet" Click OK twice to go back to the Control Panel
Configure the Connection

Activating Infrared
- Press Menu, Highlight Settings and press Select.
- Highlight Connectivity and press Select
- Highlight Infrared Port, press Select
- Switch to On and Select
Setting up the Computer
- Click on the Apple Menu icon, then on System Preferences
- Click on the Network icon
- Highlight Network Ports Configuration from the Show dropdown menu
- Ensure IrDA Modem Port has a tick next to it
- Highlight IrDA Modem Port from the Show dropdown menu
- Highlight New Location from the Location dropdown menu
- Enter Optus Internet, then click on OK
- Click on the TCP/IP tab, then select using PPP from the Configure dropdown menu
- In the Domain Name Servers box, enter 202.139.124.225
- Highlight the PPP tab. Enter Optus in the Service Provider field.
- In the Telephone number field, enter *99#
- Enter your mobile phone number in the Account Name field and leave the password field blank.
- Click on PPP options. Remove the tick from Send PPP Echo Packets
- Ensure Use TCP Header Compression is ticked and then click on OK
- Click on the Modem tab. Select Nokia Infrared Modem from the Modem dropdown list.
- Ensure Enable Error Correction & Compression in Modem is ticked. In the Sound field, ensure that the On radio button is selected.
- In the Dialing field, ensure that the Tone radio button is selected and Ensure that Wait for Dial tone before dialing is not ticked.
- Click Apply Now, then close the Network Preferences panel.
- Highlight Finder from the Dock, then click on the Applications icon.
- Double-click on the Internet Connect application
- Highlight IrDA Modem Port from the configuration dropdown menu
- Align the infrared port on the mobile phone with the infrared port on the computer
- Click on Connect
You will now connect to Wireless Internet
